[:nl]Veel vintage microfoons worden nog dagelijks gebruikt, sommige in de studio en andere door reporters/journalisten. Microfoons uit 1950 of 1960 of hele late uit uit 1970.
Hierboven: STC 4104, sinds 1951; Sennheiser MD 21, sinds 1953; Shure 545, sinds 1960; Sennheiser MD 421, sinds 1960 en LEM DO 20, sinds 1965. Al deze microfoons worden nog veel gebruikt en zijn nog in productie.
Maar zelfs de kwaliteit van de vroegste microfoons wordt onderschat…
De meeste mensen denken dat oude microfoons vrij slecht klinken, met veel ruis en kraak geluiden. Dat komt omdat de enige manier om de kwaliteit te beluisteren afhankelijk is van de oude opnamen, maar juist daar zit hem de kneep: oude opnamen zijn zelf krakerig en, omdat ze meestal op acetaat zijn vastgelegd, zitten ze ook vol met tikken en andere bijgeluiden. Aan de microfoons ligt het meestal niet.
Hier is een voorbeeld van een oude opname van Hendrik Colijn, met een Reisz M 109 kool microfoon gemaakt: 
En hier is een moderne opname met dezelfde microfoon. Colijn was niet langer beschikbaar, dus heb ik zelf een nieuwe versie ingesproken.
Niet een perfecte geluidskwaliteit, maar wel een stuk acceptabeler.
Hier volgt een fragment uit de beroemde oorlogstoespraak van Winston Churchill, gesproken in een STC 4017 dynamische microfoon van de BBC:

Het verschil is duidelijk: ik had nooit de Engelse bevolking kunnen inspireren tot grote daden en afzien in oorlogstijd, maar de geluidskwaliteit van de microfoon is prima.[:en]A lot of vintage microphones remain in daily use; some in the studio, others by reporters. Microphones dating from the Fifties, Sixties, or real late ones from the Seventies.

But even the quality of the earlier mikes is underestimated…
Most people think that old microphones had a very limited sound quality, and produce lots of hiss and crackle noises. That is because the only way to judge the quality is by listening to old recordings, but that is just the thing: old recordings themselves are full of hiss and crackle, and since they were often recorded on acetate, they are peppered with ticks and other noises.

The result is evident: I would have failed to inspire the people of the United Kingdom entirely, but the sound quality is very reasonable.[:]
